How to meet new people when you work from home
· Callumbra
Working from home has its perks, but also a cost you notice over time: without office colleagues, days can go by without talking to anyone new. The good news is that a couple of habits can bring back that contact with other people.
Get out of the house at least once a day
It sounds obvious, but it's hard. Working a few hours in a café, a library or a coworking space puts you near other people. Over time you start seeing familiar faces, and from there to chatting is a small step.
Have a fixed activity each week
- A group sport, a dance class or a workshop with a set schedule.
- A walking or running group on weekends.
- Volunteering: it gives meaning to your time and you meet people with similar values.
- An in-person language course or a language exchange.
Talk to new people from home
Online conversations don't replace in-person ones, but they do help break the routine. A video call with someone from somewhere else after work changes your day and keeps you in practice for conversation.
Set your limits
When you work from home, work tends to eat up the rest of the day. Set a finishing time and use it for something social: call a friend, go to your activity or talk to someone new.
A way to start
On Callumbra you can talk on video with new people when your workday ends, from your browser and with nothing to install. If you choose interests, we connect you first with someone who shares one. It's 18+ only.
