How to meet people on video chat safely

Before you start

• Use a neutral background and check that your address, your ID or anything that identifies you isn't visible.
• Choose a name that isn't your full name.
• Confirm the platform requires being 18 or older and offers reporting and blocking.

What you shouldn't share

• Your address, workplace or school, or your schedule.
• Your phone number or social media in the first few minutes. When you do want to, let it be because you already feel comfortable.
• Passwords, verification codes or card details — never, for any reason.

Signs of a scam or a fake account

• They ask for money, gifts or transfers, even «for an emergency».
• They quickly move you to another app or an unknown link.
• The video looks like a repeated recording, or the person never responds to what you say.
• They pressure you to decide fast or ask you not to tell anyone.

If someone makes you uncomfortable

• End the call without explaining yourself. You don't owe anyone a conversation.
• Report the person and block them. On Umbra, no one finds out it was you.
• If you suspect the other person is a minor, report it as «Suspected minor» and leave the call: it's reviewed with top priority.
• If you're threatened or feel in danger, tell someone you trust and your local authorities.
