How to practice English by talking with real people (free)

· Callumbra

You can study English for years and still freeze when it's time to speak. That's because understanding and speaking are different skills: the second only improves by speaking. The good news is that today you can practice real conversation for free, without traveling or paying for private lessons. Here's how.

Why speaking is so hard

When you speak you have to build sentences in real time, with someone waiting. If you've only practiced by reading or doing exercises, your brain isn't used to that pressure. The solution isn't more grammar, but piling up short, frequent conversations.

Free ways to practice

  • Language exchange: you help someone with your language and they help you with English. There are groups and apps dedicated to this.
  • Video calls with people from other countries: you hear real accents and have to answer on the spot.
  • Talking to yourself out loud: describe what you're doing while you cook or walk. It feels odd, but it trains fluency.
  • Recording yourself: a one-minute voice note about your day, played back later, shows you which words you're missing.

A routine that works

  • Five to ten minutes of conversation several times a week is worth more than one hour once a month.
  • Before each conversation, prepare three topics and a couple of key words for each.
  • Afterwards, write down two or three words you were missing and look them up.
  • Repeat the same topics with different people: the second time it comes out much more easily.

How to stop being afraid of mistakes

Most people appreciate the effort of speaking their language and don't expect perfection. Say it at the start («I'm practicing my English, sorry for my mistakes») and the pressure drops right away. Making mistakes is part of the process: it's the only way to find out what you're missing.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I practice to notice progress?

It depends on your starting level, but with short conversations several times a week most people feel more at ease within a few weeks. Consistency matters more than length.
