What happened to Omegle? Why it shut down and what to use now

· Callumbra

For more than a decade, Omegle was synonymous with talking to strangers online: you went in, it matched you with someone at random and that was it. In November 2023 it closed for good. If you landed here looking for Omegle, this is what happened and what to look for if you want to keep meeting people on video.

What Omegle was

Omegle was born in 2009 as a text chat that randomly paired two strangers, with no sign-up. Soon after it added video and became huge, especially among young people. Its appeal was the same as its problem: anyone could get in within seconds, with no account and without giving any information.

Why it shut down

In November 2023, its founder posted a farewell letter on the site's homepage. He explained that running Omegle was no longer sustainable, financially or psychologically, amid lawsuits and criticism over misuse of the platform.

The background was well known: a fully anonymous site is very hard to moderate. If someone misbehaves, they just open another tab to come back. That made it easy for inappropriate content and risky situations involving minors to happen, which ended in legal trouble for the site.

What we learned from its story

  • Total anonymity attracts the people who do the most harm, because there are no consequences.
  • A report button does little if nobody reviews the reports or if the reported person is back in a minute.
  • Without a minimum age check, any video chat ends up mixing adults and minors, which is exactly what has to be avoided.
  • Purely random matching creates lots of two-second conversations. Connecting people by shared interests helps chats last.

What to look for in a video chat today

  • That it requires you to be 18+ and asks for some kind of account, so blocking and banning actually work.
  • That reporting and blocking are visible throughout the call.
  • That someone (a person, not just an algorithm) reviews reports.
  • That it works in the browser without asking you to install apps from dubious sources.
  • That «free» is clear: how much you can use without paying and whether they ask for a card.

Where we stand

Callumbra was built with those lessons in mind: 1-on-1 video chat from the browser, 18+ only, with an account and a confirmed email, and with reports reviewed by a person on the team. It isn't Omegle and has no connection to that brand; if you want to compare options, our alternatives guide explains what each one offers.
